73-9 vs GoatLab: Can Your Roster Beat the Warriors, or Your Player Make the Hall?

Updated September 23, 2026 · 4 min read · by the GoatLab team

HoopsHype's 73-9 game hands you a $100M cap and five random team-seasons to beat the 2015-16 Warriors. GoatLab builds one player and plays his career, or drafts a squad for a roguelike gauntlet. Here is how they compare.

The 73-9 game from HoopsHype and HoopsMatic took off in July 2026, reportedly passing a million plays in its first 18 hours. The premise is clean: you get a $100 million salary cap, five players from random team-seasons since 1990, and the game simulates whether your lineup would have beaten the 2015-16 Warriors' 73-9 record. GoatLab plays in the same space with a different shape, so here is the honest comparison.

Quick verdict

  • 73-9 is a salary-cap puzzle with a single, brutal target and an "optimal lineup" reveal that tells you what you should have done. Excellent for one intense run.
  • GoatLab is two games in one: build a single player across nine slots and play his whole career, or draft a seven-man squad and take it through a one-life gauntlet.
  • If you want to argue about cap value, 73-9. If you want a daily habit with a streak and a career, GoatLab.

What makes 73-9 special

The cap. Most spin games let you take the best player on the wheel. 73-9 makes you pay for him, and a re-spin costs $10 million of a budget you cannot afford to waste. That one rule turns a slot machine into a general manager's job. Then, when you inevitably lose to the Warriors, the game shows you the optimal lineup from the same rolls, which stings in the best way.

It is a sharp piece of design and it deserved the attention it got.

Where GoatLab differs

GoatLab does not model salaries. The tension comes from somewhere else. In Build a Baller, the reel stops on one player and you have to commit his rating to one of nine slots on the body: 3-Pointer, Finishing, Dribble, Playmaking, Defense, Rebounding, Speed, Clutch or Frame. The slots are weighted, so the same 94 is worth more at Finishing than at Frame, and once a slot is filled it is filled. When all nine are set, the game plays the career: every season, All-Star selections, playoff runs, a possible ring, one injury at most, and a Hall of Fame verdict.

GOAT Squad is the closer cousin to 73-9. All seven roster slots spin at the same time, you hit STOP, keep one player, and repeat until the squad is set. Then a first-to-four series against a boss (the '96 Bulls play differently from the '04 Pistons), and if you win, a ten-stop gauntlet with one life, relics, shops, and a spoils wheel that lets you sign a player off the team you just beat. The result screen ends with a scouting report that tells you exactly which star flew past while you hesitated, which is GoatLab's version of the optimal-lineup reveal.

FAQ

Has anyone actually beaten 73-9?

Coverage at launch suggested the Warriors target was designed to be close to impossible, and we have not seen a confirmed 74-8 or better. That difficulty is the point of the game.

Does GoatLab have a salary cap mode?

No. GoatLab's constraint is slot placement and the one-player-per-stop rule in GOAT Squad. Franchise Mode is a GM game, but it is built around the players you created rather than a cap.

Is GoatLab free?

Yes. Every game runs in the browser with no download or payment. Accounts are optional and save your builds, streaks and Hall of Fame.
